    About Rippers

For fields where you’re looking to alleviate soil compaction, a ripper (also referred to as an “inline ripper” or a “disk ripper” when combined with a disk), is the tillage equipment of choice. Rippers are designed for deep tillage and in many cases are used only on specific areas of fields where compaction from water or traffic from machinery such as combines and grain carts is a concern. On hardpan soil, a ripper can open up the potential for deeper root growth. Rippers also allow for better residue and erosion management, allowing moisture, fertilizer, and nutrients to more easily penetrate the soil.

    John Deere 915 V-Ripper

    Common Features

Rippers are available from a wide variety of manufacturers. Case IH, for example, makes inline rippers with 2.3- to 8.1-metre (7.5- to 26.5-foot) working widths, 762- to 1,016-millimetre (30- to 40-inch) row spacings, and 559-mm (22-in.) coulter diameters. The manufacturer’s Ecolo-Tiger and Conser-Till disc rippers come in 3.4- to 7.9-m (11.25- to 26-ft) working widths with up to 13 shanks spaced 610 to 762 mm (24 to 30 in.) apart.

Ripper shanks typically come in two versions: curved or straight. The shanks on Case IH rippers may include patented Tiger points that extend down, back, and out, which the manufacturer says creates better soil tilth, or condition. In most rippers, a coulter in front of the shanks will cut a path while also breaking up crop residue. Shanks are available for both conventional tillage or no-till applications that require minimal surface disruption. Some rippers come with a leveling attachment to smooth out the soil behind the shanks and/or discs.

Some advanced rippers can be adjusted on the fly from the cab through systems such as John Deere’s TruSet Tillage system and Case IH’s AFS Soil Command. Available for the Ecolo-Tiger 875, AFS Soil Command “adjusts fore/aft levelness, crumbler pressure, disk gang depth, and leveler depth as shank depth is adjusted,” according to the manufacturer.

    Find The Right Ripper

Popular manufacturers of new and used rippers available on MarketBook.ca include Case IH, DMI, John Deere, Krause, Kuhn Krause, Landoll, Sunflower, Unverferth, and others.
