Freightliner Unveils 5th-Generation Cascadia
Freightliner recently announced the fifth generation of the popular Cascadia semitruck, which has advanced safety features, improved aerodynamics, and new business intelligence tools. Freightliner's parent company, Daimler Truck North America, says the latest-generation Cascadia will begin production in mid-2025.
“Since its original introduction in 2007, our customers have purchased more than 1 million Freightliner Cascadias, making it the most-driven Class 8 truck on North American roads,” says David Carson, senior vice president of sales and marketing, Daimler Truck North America. “When we set out to develop this newest version and build on its legacy of excellence, we listened closely to our customers and what they, their drivers, and their fleets needed. More safety features, greater efficiency, and increased profitability is what we heard, and it’s what we’re proud to deliver.”
New Safety Features
The latest Cascadia has the new, expanded Detroit Assurance suite of safety systems, which includes enhanced computing power, an upgraded camera, four new short-range radar sensors, and an upgraded long-range radar sensor. Active Brake Assist 6 can now add automatic braking when vehicles stopped at odd angles, in curves, or stopped across multiple lanes are detected, and it can recognize moving and stationary pedestrians.
Active Lane Assist 2 now includes Lane Change Assist, which reduces collisions by providing counter steering if the truck tries to enter an occupied lane. Attentive Driver Protection with Lane Keep Assist, part of the Active Lane Assist system, monitors driver attention through steering wheel input. It can keep the truck centered in its lane, slow it to a stop, and turn the hazard lights on if the driver is not responsive.
Side Guard Assist 2 can detect and warn drivers of objects on the driver and passenger sides of the entire length of the vehicle from the cab to the end of the trailer.
The Intelligent Braking Control System uses brake-by-wire technology with backup pneumatics, wheel speed sensors, and a chassis-mounted electronic control unit for advanced deceleration control. The system also includes features to extend brake life, improve brake force distribution, and prevent rollaway.
Improved Vision
The new Dual Stage Intelligent LED Headlights have improved impact resistance and can melt ice and eliminate condensation. Their increased beam pattern and auto high beam feature improve visibility and comfort.
The factory-installed MirrorCam System uses cameras mounted above the doors and is equipped with infrared technology and hydrophobic coating to repel water. The system improves visibility and driver comfort by reducing head and neck movement.
More Efficiency
Aerodynamic improvements, including a new hood, a redesigned A-pillar deflector, 3-piece front wheel well closeouts, a hood-to-bumper seal, and new bumper air ducts, improve fuel economy by 1.9%. The optional Max Aero Bumper further improves efficiency while maintaining ground clearance.
The Cascadia offers a range of engine options, including the Detroit DD13 and DD15 engines, with ratings of up to 505 horsepower (377 kilowatts) and 1,850 pounds-foot (2,508 newton-meters) of torque. The Cummins X15 will be available in 2025, and the first natural gas engine designed for heavy-duty and on-highway truck operations, the Cummins X15N, will be available in 2026. The Cummins engines are available with 400 to 605 HP (298 to 451 kW) and 1,450 to 2,050 lbf-ft (1,966 to 2,780 N-m) of torque.
