Caterpillar recently revealed Cat COMMAND for Compaction, a new technology that will launch in the first quarter of 2020 as a dealer-installed kit that will be available on both new and existing B-series compactors. Caterpillar says COMMAND for Compaction is designed to assist the operator by automating “the soil compaction process,” while also helping “contractors achieve compaction quality.” This allows operators with varying skill sets to operate compactors properly, which “enables compaction quality by maintaining constant speed and correct pass count with consistent and precise overlap,” the company adds.

    Easy-To-Use Solution

Cat COMMAND for Compaction features an in-cab touchscreen display that “connects to common base stations with no back office or design needed,” according to Caterpillar. The system is designed for ease of use. The operator simply enters specific compaction parameters, sets boundaries for the area to be compacted, and then puts the system on auto. At that point, Cat COMMAND “will control the propulsion, steering, and vibration of the machine,” Caterpillar says.

The system includes object detection and can even notify the operator if an area cannot be compacted using vibration, in which case it can be switched to manual after the initial pass. Operators can also access information from past jobs on the display for quick reference.
